Vessels
NIWA's vessels are world class environmental monitoring and research platforms.
NIWA Vessel Management Ltd is a subsidiary company of NIWA, and is the owner and operator of NIWA's fleet of research vessels. NIWA's vessels are used for oceanographic, fisheries and coastal research as well as for marine engineering and environmental studies. The vessel company carries out most of the ship maintenance using its mechanical and electrical workshops at Greta Point, Wellington.

Antarctic Whale Expedition at half-way mark

Tangaroa
Tangaroa is the only ice-strengthened research vessel in New Zealand and the base for NIWA's major offshore operations. Read more about Tangaroa

Pelorus
Pelorus is a purpose-built hydrographic survey launch, which has been fitted out and capable of operating in cold climates such as the Antarctic. It can be carried and launched from NIWA’s Research Vessel Tangaroa. Read more about Pelorus
